Admissions Policy 2021/22
This policy will take effect from 1 September 2020 for ‘in year’ admissions Years 7-11 and for the intake of children starting secondary school for the first time, transferring from Year 6 into Year 7 on 1 September 2021.

Students will be admitted to Northwood School at the age of 11 without reference to ability or aptitude. The standard number for admission to Year 7 is 180.
Northwood is part of the Pan-London Co-ordinated Admissions Scheme and application forms for Year 7 transfer can be obtained from the local authority in which your child lives. Alternatively you can apply online at www.eadmissions.org.uk. The closing date for applications is 31st October 2020. Offer letters will be sent to parents by their local authority on 1st March 2021.
Students with a Education, Health & Care Plan
As your child approaches the age for transfer to secondary school a suitable placement will be discussed at your child’s annual review. You may at that time indicate your choice of school. If you wish your child to attend a mainstream school you should also fill in and return the application form you receive from your child’s primary school.
The SEND team will deal with this application (for students with statements) and will contact both you and your school of choice. The SEND team will then write to you amending the statement and naming the new school.
You will also receive a letter from the Admissions Team confirming the placement; this will arrive at the same time as it does for all other students who are transferring to secondary school in September 2021.
A calendar for the allocation of Special Needs places has been agreed with the LA, and must be closely adhered to.
Criteria for Admission into National Curriculum Year 7 September 2021
The following criteria apply for applications to join National Curriculum Year 7 at the time of secondary school transfer for children not with an ECH Plan.
These criteria formed part of Northwood School’s Foundation School submission and the Governors are now responsible to the Secretary of State for Education and Science for their implementation.
Students will be admitted without reference to their ability or aptitude.
The Governors may in discussion with the LA allocate some places to children for whom an EHC Plan exists.
In the event of over-subscription the following criteria will be applied in the order shown.
1. Children in public care
2. Children who have a sibling attending the school at the time of application and who would reasonably be expected to still be attending Northwood School in September 2021.
A sibling is a brother or sister, which for admission purposes means brothers or sisters of whole or half blood, or any other child (including an adopted child) who permanently resides at the same address and for whom the parent also has parental responsibility.
3. Children of staff in either or both of the following circumstances:
a) where the member of staff has been employed at the school for two or more years at the time at which the application for admission to the school is made, and/or
b) the member of staff is recruited to fill a vacant post for which there is a demonstrable skill shortage.
4. Children whose homes are nearest to the school measured in a straight line from the point set by Ordnance Survey at the child’s home address (including flats) to the school (co-ordinates 5104630, 1904380) using the Local Authority’s computerised measuring system, with those living closer to the school receiving the higher priority.
If two applications have equal-distance addresses there will be tie-breaker. The oldest child will have priority.
Where a child resides equally at two addresses the permanent address will be taken as where child benefit is paid.
Multiple births – Where applications are received in respect of twins, triplets or children of other multiple births and the school is able to offer one child a place in accordance with the Admissions criteria, the school will offer a place to the other child (children).

IN YEAR ADMISSIONS
As an academy, Northwood School is its own admissions authority school. This means that applications for a place other than the primary to secondary transfer are made directly to the school.

Entry to Years 12 and 13 (Post-16)

If you have applied for, but not been offered a place for your child at Northwood School, you have the right to lodge an appeal against the decision. Such appeals are dealt with under the ‘Appeals Procedure’ established by the Governing Body. If you wish to lodge an appeal you should put your request in writing to Northwood School, marking your envelope for the attention of the Clerk to Governors and include a stamped, self addressed envelope. You will then be sent an appeals pack with details of the appeals procedure. Requests for Appeals for Year 7 transfer for September 2021 should be registered by 31st March 2021, to enable the appeals to be heard before the end of the summer term. Appeals for all other year groups can be lodged at any time and must be heard with 30 school working days.
